University of Calgary

Journals

The Department of English hosts two journals, ARIEL and dANDelion .

ARIEL: A Review of International English Literature is one of the world's premiere journals in post-colonial literary studies. Founded at the University of Calgary in 1970 under the editorship of A. Norman Jeffares, the journal was one of the first to open the field of what was then called "Commonwealth Literature," and it also quickly became a leader in the application of theoretical approaches. With a readership and subscriber base in more than fifty countries, it continues to excel as a venue for advanced thought in the study of the world's literatures in English.

dANDelion is a literary and visual arts magazine staffed by students in our creative writing program and housed in the Department of English but operated as an independent arms-length enterprise of the Dandelion Magazine Society, a non-profit organization with a Calgary community Board. Funded by the Calgary Regional Arts Foundation, the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, the Canada Council, and Canadian Heritage, dANDelion is an important player in the vibrant Calgary, Alberta, and Canada arts scenes and an excellent vehicle for developing editorial and publishing expertise in our creative writing students.

NöD Magazine
NöD is a literary magazine published and edited by the University of Calgary's undergraduate students in the English Literature Student Society (ELSS). The magazine publishes prose, poetry and art submitted by students and writers in and outside the University.
