English 691 or its equivalent as well as six (6) graduate full-course equivalents after a bachelor's degree, or three (3) graduate full-course equivalents after a master's degree.

In addition to at least one FCE in literature from the twentieth-century and after, a doctoral student must include in the courses claimed for graduate credit beyond the BA at least three HCE from the following areas, at least two of them from i, ii, or iii:

i) Medieval literature;
ii) Early Modern literature;
iii) Restoration and eighteenth-century literature;
iv) Romantic literature and Victorian literature.

Second Language Requirement A reading knowledge of one language other than English.

PhD students must submit 1. an initial PhD thesis proposal by September 30th of the second year after taking the Comprehensive examination 2. a final thesis proposal three months after successful completion of Field of Study examinations (see forms for instructions).

General Comprehensive Examination

The written General Comprehensive Examination is held during Fall Block Week of the second year in program. 

Field of Study Examinations

The written Field of Study examination is a take-home examination written over 3 weeks.

The oral Field of Study examination is a formal oral exam scheduled usually by the 25 month after the student's initial registration in the program (for those who entered the program with an M.A. degree). 

Final PhD Thesis Proposal

Final PhD Thesis Proposal must be formally reviewed and approved by the PhD Supervisory Committee, usually by the 28 month of program and no later than 3 months after the oral Field of Study examination. Guidelines for the Final Thesis Proposal appear on the Forms page.

PhD Thesis A thesis on an approved topic. Students may apply to present a creative writing project as their thesis requirement on the condition that a supervisor is available and students meet the requirement of demonstrated ability. See our page on the PhD with Creative Thesis.
Oral Thesis Examination

A final oral defence on completion of the above requirements normally by the 50th month in program.

Examining Committee: The Supervisor will hand in a Membership Recommendations for PhD Thesis Examination no less than 8 weeks before the proposed thesis defence date.
