International Applicants

The Department of English encourages applications from international students.  They are considered on an equal basis with applications from Canadian residents.

Details concerning admission requirements for international applicants, including grade equivalency, appear at Future Students Overview (international)

The International Students Centre (ISC) provides support services.  Once admitted an international student will need to obtain a Study Permit from the Canadian government.

English Language Proficiency (ELP). For applicants required to provide proof of proficiency in English (usually those whose primary language is not English) test reports are needed, showing a minimum TOEFL score of 600 (paper-based), 105 (Internet-based test), MELAB score of 86, an IELTS score of 7.5 (with no band less than 7.0), or a PTE score of 75. The tests must have been taken within the last two years. Applicants are advised that near-native fluency is required for success in the English program. ELP tests must have been taken within the last two years. The University of Calgary code for TOEFL is  0813.

Fees & Scholarships.  All students are assessed tuition and fees; international students are also assessed the  differential tuition fee.  See the Grad Calendar for a breakdown of tuition costs at

Funding.  There are many options for funding. See Scholarships and Awards for International Students and also the Department of English Funding Opportunities for graduate studies.

An International Differential Fee (IDF) award is normally provided to help offset some the differential tuition fee. The IDF will vary from year to year.
