Research and teaching interests

My research and teaching interests include various aspects of critical and cultural theory in the areas of race, gender, postcoloniality and diaspora, indigeneity and indigenization, pedagogy, disability and illness, animals and animality, subjectivity and identity. In the classroom, I emphasize critical thinking and readings of cultural texts, particularly the importance of reflecting on cultural and personal ideologies. I expect that we will engage with how literary and cultural texts function within their social and historical contexts, engaging in research of these different contexts as they come to bear upon our interpretations and readings of both texts and the world. Most recently, I have been involved in work on indigenization of the academy: in particular focussing on curriculum and pedagogy within indigenous studies programs, on notions of reconciliation in Canada and internationally, and on the legacy of residential schools in Canada.
