Professional Description

I have been at U of C since 1979, teaching a broad range of courses including my specialty, British literature of the Romantic period. My research interests over the years have been quite diverse, ranging from the early eighteenth century (Poe, Gay, Elizabeth Thomas) to the late nineteenth century (Bram Stoker). Following a conference we organized in 1997, I co-edited (with Helen Buss and Lorne Macdonald) a volume of essays, Mary Wollstonecraft and Mary Shelley: Writing Lives (Wilfrid Laurier UP, 2001). I edited Shelley's novel The Last Man for Broadview Press in 1996; more recently, I have an edition of Amelia Opie's Adeline Mowbray (1805) in press (also with Broadview). In collaboration with Lorne Macdonald, I have recently completed a major new anthology of Romantic-period writing: The Broadview Anthology of Literature of the Revolutionary Period, 1770-1830. This will appear in 2008.

Administratively, I have served as Associate Head (undergraduate) in the Department of English and as Associate Dean (Development & Research) in the Faculty of Humanities.
